On the Road Again
Well, it’s official. I’m going to DC for the 9/12 project. There’s a slight hitch in the git-up though. I had signed up to room with three other guys to keep the costs as nominal as possible, but everyone else is just wanting a single roommate so I have to pony up more cash.
We will be traveling to DC via bus. Yes, I’m not looking forward to it. Limited computational time due to no A/C to recharge the battery and no wireless access. On the flip side, it will give me time to catch up on some reading.
While I love my iPod Shuffle, I want to carry more music with me than the shuffle will allow. This isn’t about wanting to listen to more music, this is about having more music with me that isn’t on a laptop. To that end, I am highly considering a purple nano. Rumor has it that there may be new iPods announced September 7th which should bring the price of the current gen way down. The problem there is that it’s too close to leave date for DC and therefore would require overnight shipping which may not get the goods to me fast enough. I can get a refurbed 8 GB for $99 off of Apple’s site atm, but the money is in the wrong place. Perhaps I’ll pick up some unexpected overtime between now and then and this purchase will make more sense in time.
Because of the trip to DC, I’m considering canceling Sidewalk this year. At this point, I haven’t talked to my Aunt and Uncle in the ‘ham where I have stayed years past. Furthermore, going to DC and loosing a weekend of overtime is bad enough, but twice in a month? That’s just unacceptable.
It’s a shame too. I naively tweeted Kevin Spacey about our fair festival and I purchased m0bil30n3 specifically with Sidewalk in mind. Last year the festival itself was a drag. I spent the entire time at panels discussing film instead of watching film. I’m not really expecting anything better this year.
I do, however, need to purchase a camera between now and then. I still want a Nikon DSLR, but it’s looking like I’m going to have to settle for a coolpix. I’m not happy about this either, but the good news is that the coolpix will be more than sufficient for taking snapshots which is the point. I think I’m going to have to make a decision between the camera and the iPod. The right decision would be to not spend money on the iPod because I already have one and this point, long distance traveling like the DC trip is the exception and not the rule.
The new shuffles would do me just fine except for the fact that I can’t use my Bose® In-Ear headphones. And navigating through the amount of music I want to put on the thing would be impractical without a display. So despite the new shuffles being at the right price-point, Apple fucked themselves out of a sale. In short, I want a nano for all the reasons that
ehowton listed. *le sigh*
The right thing to do is buy the portable, over-priced snapshot machine and sell it when I have the cash next year to get the camera I want.
In other news, I plan on spamming the web with several film reviews this weekend along with other writing projects despited a packed weekend. Stay tuned.

All sounds good! Looking forward to it.
The Coolpix isn’t that bad of a camera – Texas as it – and it works fine in most situations.
Like you, though, she’d rather have a better, more flexible camera. Perhaps if I’m able to scrounge up the cash it’ll make an awesome Christmas (but more likely) birthday present next year…
Looking forward to the film reviews! On that note, are you going to see Brad Pitt’s new film, Inglorious Bastards next week? It’s out on the 21st…
@cmdr_keen - Is Inglorious Bastards really next week? I’ve been hem-hawing but I think I’m going to see it for the hell of it, if only to have something to write about.
@ProfessorTom - Yup, August 21st. I’m looking forward to it, and even Texas thinks she’ll want to go see it.
Definitely one to netflix if you’re not able to go see it at the box office.
Funny you mention the Coolpix. I did some research and showed Paul the CoolPix 8700. That’s what I used circa 2004 when it was new and I was doing professional product photography – the thing took beautiful, amazing pics. I think I’m settling for that as well. I found plenty of new and like-new on eBay that have upgraded packages and even come wtih wide and telephoto lenses and the large flash. I don’t want to wait too long since Aaron is so little and will grow up fast.
@DirtyAndShaken - You misunderstand. I mean something along the lines of the L19. I still want a D60.
Ohhhhh. I have a Coolpix S550 and I love it. But yeah, I’d still LOVE to have a D60. I’m just settling for the 8700 until Paul wins the lottery or my street walking job picks up again.
@DirtyAndShaken - What are you pricing the 8700 at? A quick Google search showed $600.
Like new on eBay this weekend brought up $150 to $300 depending on the equipment that they are giving with it.
try audiobooks from your library. load up a bunch to your laptop and just switch and swap the library. it sure is an education.
@supsoo - That doesn’t solve any of the problems mentioned here.
well. it is a great way to learn new things while semi-occupied. each audiobook is about 11 hours. so rather than have random songs that you may or may not like you have 11hours of continuous entertainment. considering that you are traveling from AL about four books will do which would be about 1.5gb of material. imagine 40 hours of entertainment for 1.5gb. oh wells. it is my outlet to repetition in my life.
For how long will you go by bus?
@nattata - They’re leaving at some God-aweful 0645 in the morning. I’m assuming that we’re looking at no less than 12 hours, so any donations you wanted to send for iPods and cameras would be greatly appreciated.
@ProfessorTom - Haha, I saw in the other photo that you already own an ipod!
@nattata - Yes I do. But as I mentioned in my post, it doesn’t hold as much music as I would like for it to. I simply won’t be able to bring all the tunes with me I want. This isn’t about total listening time as I’m sure that the Shuffle will last more than long enough. Rather, it’s about taking a wider selection of music with me in a confined space.
@ProfessorTom - Just sing your own songs!
@nattata - You’re riding on the same bus so I can serenade you, right?
@ProfessorTom - Sure!
@nattata - Make sure you sign up.
